Why do you wish to be part of the 2014 ANZSEE Executive team?

I am currently the Treasurer for ANZSEE and have been a member since my informative years as a economics PhD student when I attended my first ANZSEE conference in the 1990s. Ever since, I have been impressed by the society, its activities and members, and because I believe in the philosophy of the society – the importance of the nexus between ecology and economics and other disciplines to solving world problems – I have been an active participant.During my 12 months as Treasurer, I have successfully helped manage the society’s finances, and with the current conference, to ensure these finances are strengthened to the benefit of members. I have also helped with the society’s governance and our 2013 conference, co-developing the special sessions on coastal climate adaptation and organising keynote speakers on issues of importance of to Aboriginal peoples.I hold a bachelor of commerce, bachelor of economics, first class honours and PhD from the University of Queensland, have a strong research and policy history in natural resource, environmental, ecological, and public economics. I have also worked in all sectors, private, public and non-profit and hope to bring this experience to bear in executing the continued financial success of the society.

Why do you wish to be part of the 2014 ANZSEE Executive team?

I am a trained ecologist who has worked as an environmental scientist for over 20 years.  As a practitioner in this field I have seen huge progress in our use of our natural capital, in particular around pollution prevention and mitigation.  However, our improvement in practice has not kept pace with our consumption and I feel strongly that those of us with knowledge and experience need to assist in educating the public, policy makers, scientists and especially neoclassical economist on how we can sustain an ever growing human population within a closed system, our planet.  As such I am keen to be involved with organisations who work in this field. I have energy, passion and drive, I work cooperatively and have an ever growing network of similarly minded people in New Zealand. As a NZ representative on the committee I would help ANZSEE cement its presence here.

Nominated for:

  1. Secretary
  2. General executive

Why do you wish to be part of the 2014 ANZSEE Executive team?

I joined the ANZSEE Executive team at the end of 2012, and have served as Secretary during 2013. It has been an exciting year to be part of the ANZSEE Exec, as we have been doing a lot behind the scenes to make a better Society for our members. I have been an active member of the Conference Organising Committee, have been primarily responsible for rolling out our new website and social media presence, and along with the Communications Working Group, have been developing a communications strategy for ANZSEE that we aim to initiate next year.If I am re-elected to the Executive next year, I look forward to progressing the initiatives we currently have in development as well as new ones, for a more engaged and active ecological economics society. My research is focused on decision making and policy development for environmental issues, by drawing upon principles and tools from economics and conservation science. I hold a dual Bachelors degree in Science (Ecology) and Arts (Mathematics) from the University of Queensland, and I am currently studying for my PhD at the Fenner School of Environment and Society, at the Australian National University.

Why do you wish to be part of the 2014 ANZSEE Executive team?

I have been active in ISEE since 1994, published in Ecological Economics (Dec 2009), and wish to be more active in ANZSEE; I am currently President of AFEE (Association for Evolutionary Economics), on the editorial board of 6 journals, and completing a research monograph on the principles of heterodox political economy applied to current world problems, such as climate change, deep recession, financial instability, inequality and community dislocation, AIDS-HIV, and so on.  I joined ISEE in 1994 and have published in Ecological Economics (Dec 2009). If elected to ANZSEE Executive I could assist in areas of my expertise such as organising international conferences, publishing newsletters, and networking with members.

Nominated for:

  1. President
  2. Vice-President
  3. General executive

Why do you wish to be part of the 2014 ANZSEE Executive team?

I currently hold the ANZSEE president role (2013) and have previously been part of the executive (2004-6). My vision for ANZSEE is as a collaborative organization that leverages off our vast perspectives to create a viable group that encourages innovative thinking and is useful to our current society. In achieving this I’d like ANZSEE to look towards increasing its profile with societal decision makers, co-coordinating with ISEE through alternate year conferences, co-host symposiums and encourage new members and students through building a enjoyable culture. This is a multi-year plan. This year we have organized a successful ANZSEE conference, reinstated regular meetings to enhance collaboration through the executive, taken a more professional approach to image and governance and outlined extra activities to leverage off the conference success. I would like to lead ANZSEE through this implementation period of great ideas and stand for president in 2014.I am an ecological economist, who balances full time work as a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Canberra (previous roles in; Universities, CSIRO, Sate Government, private consulting) and family commitments. I am a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and have held various positions in a number of voluntary associations.

Why do you wish to be part of the 2014 ANZSEE Executive team?

In a time of converging pressure points including climate change, food security, and resource depletion public policy making in the sustainability policy domain will need best scientific evidence to support decision making. The ecological economics scientific community is well suited to provide research insights for policy development and I see ANZSEE as an important agent to facilitate the communication process between science and policy. I have been an EE member for many years and would be happy to bring my organizational knowledge and talent to bear to help ecological economics to become more relevant in the Australian and New Zealand policy discourse.

Why do you wish to be part of the 2014 ANZSEE Executive team?

I am an environmental scientist of 38 years experience (Visiting Fellow, Institute of Environmental Studies, UNSW) and the Co-Director of the Center for a Steady State Economy in NSW. I have written 5 books on environmental issues and have been a Director of NGOs. I believe that ANZSEE can play an important  role in providing an alternative to the growth economy – a steady state economy. This is a discussion Australia needs to have and one I believe I can make a contribution to in ANZSEE.
